More than 5,800 signatures — including over 1,100 academics at 439 universities in 51 countries.

Among those who have signed or written in support: Luciano Floridi (Yale), Shannon Vallor (Edinburgh), Guosheng Wu (Tsinghua), Carissa Véliz (Oxford), Edward Harcourt (Oxford), Alex John London (Carnegie Mellon), Brendan McCord (Cosmos Institute), Rachel Sterken (Hong Kong), Philip Pettit (Princeton), Slavoj Žižek (Birkbeck), Souleymane Bachir Diagne (Columbia), Catherine Malabou (Kingston), Elizabeth Anderson (Michigan), Michael Rosen (Harvard), Bonnie Honig (Brown), Simon Critchley (The New School), Eric Santner (Chicago), Christoph Menke (Frankfurt), Claire Colebrook (Monash), Ray Brassier (American University of Beirut), Mpho Tshivhase (Pretoria), Juliet Floyd (Boston University) and Sally Haslanger (MIT).

The University has proposed suspending entry to all named Philosophy degrees at Dundee from 2027, as part of a cost-reduction exercise. Philosophy is Scotland’s only programme specialising in the European ‘Continental’ tradition, and its joint degree with Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design has no equivalent anywhere in Scotland.

The Philosophy team has also put a counter-proposal to the University: a named Philosophy and AI qualification. The case for it is already on the record. Amanda Askell, a Dundee Philosophy graduate, now works on the character and values of Anthropic’s AI systems, and the Scottish Government named her one of five AI Pioneers in its AI Strategy 2026–2031.

“Continental philosophy is of particular importance for understanding the human condition in the age of artificial intelligence. As a professor and the Head of the Department of the History of Science at Tsinghua University — and a researcher specialising in the phenomenological philosophy of science and of technology — I urge the University of Dundee to make every effort to preserve its philosophy degree programs and to support the establishment of a new degree pathway in ‘Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence.’” — Professor Guosheng Wu (吴国盛), Chair, Department of the History of Science, Tsinghua University, in a letter to the campaign

Institutions are placed at their main city, so several in one city share a point; hover to see all of them. Affiliations were assigned by name recognition against a signature export recording only name, city and country, so some placements will be wrong. The country figure counts Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland separately, and treats Hong Kong and Macau as separate entries. Tsinghua University is represented by a letter of support from the Chair of its Department of the History of Science rather than by a petition signature. Dundee’s own signatories are excluded from the count.
